Day 22: Jesus Bore Your Sicknesse

Jesus Bore Your Sickness
Recently, I was changing out the batteries in my golf cart. What I quickly discovered was that removing those batteries was both difficult and awkward. They were extremely heavy, tightly secured in their slots, and not easy to lift from the position they were in. I was trying to manage the project, but the weight of the batteries was more than I could handle by myself.
Then my grandson, Daniel, asked if he could help me with the project. I gladly accepted. He is much stronger and a lot younger than I am, and he also knew how to approach the job with wisdom. He showed me how to use a strap to lift the batteries safely. Then, with his strength and the right tool, he took hold of the weight, lifted the batteries out of the golf cart, carried them to a shelf, and helped replace them with new ones.
In that moment, I did not need someone to stand nearby and simply encourage me to keep struggling. I needed someone strong enough to lift what I could not lift and wise enough to know how to complete the project. Daniel was not my cheerleader; he became my burden-bearer.
That is a beautiful picture of what Jesus has done for us. He did not come merely to encourage us while we carried the weight of sickness, weakness, and pain. He came to take hold of what was too heavy for us, bear it on our behalf, and release us into the healing love of the Father.
Matthew 8:17 gives us one of the most powerful pictures of Jesus and healing in the New Testament. After Jesus healed many who were sick and delivered those who were oppressed, Matthew declared that these miracles fulfilled what was spoken by Isaiah: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” This was not a random act of kindness. It was a revelation of His mission.
The phrase “He Himself” is deeply personal. It reminds us that Jesus did not send someone else to carry our pain. He came Himself. The Son of God stepped into our broken world, touched the sick, cleansed the lepers, opened blind eyes, cast out devils, and revealed the Father’s heart toward suffering humanity.
The word took carries the idea of taking hold of something, receiving it, or carrying it away. The word bore means to carry as a burden. Matthew is showing us that Jesus did more than feel sorry for the sick. He took hold of what afflicted them and carried what oppressed them. He did not merely stand near human suffering with sympathy. He stepped into it with authority and compassion.
This matters because many people still wonder whether God cares about physical healing. They believe He cares about the soul but question whether He cares about the body. Yet the ministry of Jesus answers that question clearly. Everywhere Jesus went, He revealed the Father’s will by healing the sick, restoring the broken, and setting captives free.
Jesus never treated sickness as something precious to protect. He treated it as something to remove. He never told people to keep their disease so they could learn something from it. He touched them, healed them, restored them, and sent them away rejoicing. His compassion was not passive; His compassion moved with power.
This does not mean we deny the reality of pain, sickness, or medical challenges. It means we bring those realities into the presence of the One who carried our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. When I was changing the golf cart batteries, I could not pretend or deny that the batteries were heavy. They were heavy, and I needed help. In the same way, faith does not pretend symptoms are not real. Faith simply refuses to believe symptoms have the final word.
Just as I had to receive Daniel’s offer to replace the batteries for me, we must learn to receive what Jesus has already offered to do for us. I had to allow Daniel to help me, trust his strength, and turn the project over to him. In the same way, faith brings the burden of sickness, weakness, and pain to Jesus and allows Him to carry what we were never meant to carry alone.
Perhaps you have carried a physical condition for a long time. Maybe you have become weary from doctor visits, medications, reports, pain, or uncertainty. You may feel as though the burden has become too heavy. Today, Matthew 8:17 reminds you that Jesus is not asking you to carry that weight alone. He is inviting you to bring your infirmities and sicknesses to Him.
Jesus understands the weakness of the body. He understands pain, exhaustion, and human limitation. He was not distant from suffering; He entered into it. The same Savior who carried the cross also carried the burden of sickness and disease. His healing ministry revealed that the Father’s heart is not to abandon the hurting but to restore them.
One of the greatest discoveries in the healing journey is realizing that healing begins with the finished work of Jesus, not with the strength of our own effort. He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. That means we are not trying to convince a reluctant Savior to care. We are learning to receive from the compassionate Christ who has already revealed the Father’s will. The burden is not greater than the Bearer. The sickness is not greater than the Savior. Jesus still carries what we were never meant to carry alone.
Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to reveal Your heart of compassion and healing. Thank You that He Himself took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses. Today I bring every weakness, pain, diagnosis, symptom, and burden into Your presence. Help me trust the finished work of Jesus and receive Your restoring power in my body. Strengthen my faith, renew my hope, and remind me that I am not carrying this alone. Thank You in advance for the healing, restoration, and wholeness You are working in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
